Renovation, Tokyo, 2014
Area 82 sqm
It started from an old-fashioned three-story building which has a nostalgic atmosphere of the Japanese 1970s. The first floor has been a clinic for decades. The owner, who’s a retired doctor and is more than 80 years old, decided to turn the space into a studio so that she could enjoy music and dance. She wanted to put 2 grand pianos, and make space for dancing since she’s also a teacher of Hawaiian Hula.
All the old interior materials were removed, then sound absorbing materials and plasterboards were used to install sound insulation layers for the walls and ceiling. The wall and ceiling are plastered. It contains tiny bubbles, has an uneven surface, so it has a moderate sound effect. The use of pink to create a warm atmosphere is the owner’s preference. Underneath the Chinese quince Herringbone flooring is a soundproof flooring material. Chinese quince is very hard wood. An acoustic expert who helped us, said that floor material should be hard, so that it can reverberate the sound coming out from under the piano. For soundproof doors, we used ready-made products to reduce costs, but they have good performance. And we used double sash windows to prevent sound leakage.
We used huge windows for this studio since it has a wide front yard which is rarely found in the city. You can see the plants in the garden and the people passing by the street through the windows, and you can see the inside from the street simultaneously. Our aim is to make this studio an open space in town where young musicians can practice and hold concerts and neighbers can feel these activities, even if passersby. Highlighting the community-based culture that has been attached to this building is one of the important factors that we considered in remodeling it.
